Do you remember our previous post on Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot and their excellent performance in front of a Cathedral iconostasis in protest against the rule of Vladimir Putin? (if not check here, they are great!)
Well, after their performance and just because the lyrics were not pleasant to the president, three young women-Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Ekaterina Samutsevichare- have being detained by Russian authorities for allegedly participating in the group and charged with “hooliganism”.
On Friday 20 , their pre-trial detention was extended until January 2013. And if convicted they could spend an additional 7 years in prison — simply for singing a song.
The three women deny any involvement in the protest although even if they took part, the severity (and absurdity) of the response of the Russian authorities would not be a justifiable response to the peaceful expression of their political beliefs .
So take action now and join the campaign of Amnesty International Here! Tell the Russian authorities to drop all charges and release them! WWT is certainly on your side girls!
