Το αλφαβητάρι αυτό σχεδιάστηκε το 1931 από τον Sergey Merkurov, Ελληνο-αρμένικης καταγωγής γλύπτη και ακαδημαϊκό της Πρώην Σοβιετικής Ένωσης, με σκοπό την καταπολέμιση του αναλφαβητισμού. Εμπνεόμενος από ελληνορωμαικές παραστάσεις ο Merkurov, χρησιμοποίησε σάτυρους, έρωτες και άλλες ερωτικές παραστάσεις έτσι ώστε να τραβήξει το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνωστικού κοινού και να συνδράμει στην εκμάθηση του κυριλλικού αλφαβήτου.
